Eric Purdue

Name: Eric Purdue
Age: 20 yrs
University: University of Minnesota
Length of time here to date: 3 months

What job are you doing in Ireland?
I work as Bar staff and event staff at the Guinness Storehouse.

Where & Who are you living with here?
I live in an apartment on Thomas Street, near Guinness’s, and about 6 blocks from the city centre and Temple Bar with my friend Kirby and two other guys!

Whats your social scene like? Where do you go? What do you do etc?
There are so many places to go out here. There are great pubs that play Irish music and great late bars where you can meet loads of great people.. During the day, walking anywhere in Dublin you can see and meet lots of different people from different cultures.

Your most memorable thing to date in Ireland?
I was in a pub in Temple Bar area with two friends that I met from Maryland, and after talking to a group of local Irish guys, they take us to a local bar/club about a mile and half away and buy us drinks for the night. Some crazy things happened that night and it was such a great laugh seeing what the locals do to have a good time!

Can you sum up your experience on the WII program to date?
I have met some amazing people from all over the world and have memories that will last a life time.

Advice you would give any students thinking about going on the WII program?
You are only young once! Do some travelling and experience everything you can before you have to get a real job and have a real life.

Radiohead

Radiohead take Marley Park by storm

The last of the big outdoor gigs of the summer are fast approaching...........
The setting for some of the most spectacular concerts of the year is Marley Park. The picturesque venue on Dublin's southside plays host to some of the most exciting acts of 2006. On Thursday the 24th of August Radiohead took to the stage with American indie rock star, Beck playing a mixture of old and new songs. They created a great stage show with puppetry and visuals. Radiohead played a storming set of mostly old tunes and a few new ones thrown in for good measure which were warmly received by an adoring crowd. The visuals and lighting were amazing. They finished the set with everyone’s favorite ‘Creep’ and the crowd went home happy.

All-Ireland hurling finals

Cork chase Guinness All-Ireland hurling treble

They have won the last four Guinness All-Ireland hurling titles between them and now Cork and Kilkenny head for another big Croke Park showdown to decide the destination of the Liam MacCarthy Cup for 2006.
Cork are bidding to win the title for the third year in a row - a feat last achieved by the same county in 1976-78 - while Kilkenny, who themselves were denied the treble by Cork two years ago, will be attempting to wreck the Leeside ambitions. It all adds up to what should be a fascinating contest.
Cork have had two close calls in their last two games, beating Limerick and Waterford by a point each. Kilkenny have had a more comfortable run to the final as the closest any of their four rivals came was when Galway staged a rally in the quarter-final to come within five points of them.

Galway Oyster Festival, Áras Failte, Galway

Enjoy four days and nights at the world renowned Galway International Oyster Festival. For the best in gourmet seafood, live music and the best Guinness in town, it has to be the Galway Oyster Festival.
From Thursday 28th September to Sunday 1st October, Galway City will come alive as thousands of people travel from the four corners of the world to enjoy a remarkable festival celebrating the oyster, a food known for it’s mysterious luxury and passion.
Each year hundreds of competitors from around the world vie for a place in this prestigious competition. The winners from each country, with enthusiastic supporters in tow, travel to the city of Galway, in the West of Ireland to compete for the world title. The Irish qualifying competition takes place in the Quays Bar on Thursday 28th September with the grand final taking place in the Oyster Marquee on Saturday 30th September.
Anyone can eat oysters but they must first be opened, or shucked (oyster shucking as our friends in the US would say), and oyster opening or shucking can be a difficult task. Come and witness it for yourself.
