Lea Marlor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Name: Lea Marlor
Age: 20yrs
University: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Length of time here to date: 3 months

What job are you doing in Ireland?
I got a job temping as a receptionist and other office work through
a recruitment agency here through the Program.

Where & Who are you living with here?
I live in Dublin with my sister and 3 other students, from Poland, Russia and China. It’s such a great exposure to new and different cultures!

Whats your social scene like?

My sister and I are saving our money for travelling so we only go out once a week. We usually go to Messr Maguires in town! We also travel every weekend to some place new in Ireland, which is great!

Your most memorable thing to date in Ireland?
My sister and I rented a car and drove around Wicklow, otherwise known as the ‘Garden Ireland’. It was so gorgeous and a real experience driving on the left side of the road on roads that are really narrow!

Can you sum up your experience on the WII program to date?
Overall, it’s been very good and enjoyable. The people here are so nice and its such an easy country to travel around since its such a small country!

Advice you would give any students thinking about going on the WII program?
I highly recommend doing the program! It’s a great learning experience and an awesome way to spend a semester away from school!

Bob Geldof

IRMA Honours award for Geldof

Bob Geldof became the third recipient of the IRMA Honours award. The award, which is organised by the Irish Recorded Music Industry recognises the outstanding talent and contribution of an artist or individual to Irish music. Previous award winners are Christy Moore and Larry Gogan.
The award was presented at a black tie event at CityWest hotel in Dublin. Born in Dublin in 1951, Geldof achieved fame as a musician with The Boomtown Rats before instigating the Band Aid and Live Aid movements in the 1980s. He was also one of the chief organisers of Live8 last year.

Beckett films for nationwide screenings

As part of the Beckett Centenary celebrations, the Irish Film Institute will present a selection of films relating to the work of Samuel Beckett at screenings in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Sligo and Belfast during April.
The diverse programme will include films such as Anthony Minghella's 'Play', starring Alan Rickman and Kristin Scott Thomas; David Mamet's 'Catastrophe' with John Gielgud in his last film role; and the definitive film version of 'Waiting for Godot'.
The IFI in Dublin is the first stop on the tour, from 14 to 16 April, and will feature a discussion on the challenges facing those who have translated Beckett's work for film - the panel will include acclaimed filmmaker Anthony Minghella, along with Alan Gilsenan, and will be hosted by Hugh Linehan of The Irish Times.
The Eye Cinema in Galway run their programme from 17 to 19 April. This will include a discussion on Beckett's work featuring award-winning filmmaker Atom Egoyan.

All-Ireland Heineken Cup Semi-Final
Munster……19 Perpignan……10

Ronan O'Gara kicked four crucial second-half penalties as Munster vaulted overcame a strong challenge from Perpignan, setting up an all-Ireland Heineken Cup semi-final against Leinster thanks to today's 19-10 victory.
The result means Ireland will be guaranteed to have a team in the May 20 decider at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
O'Gara, who started at fly-half despite a slight hamstring injury, held his nerve at Lansdowne Road to send the province into their sixth semi-final in seven seasons.

On Yer bikes! - Dublin to offer bike rentals in city!

A plan to get Dubliners to leave their cars behind and use of 500 rental bikes is currently before Dublin City Council as part of a plan to combat gridlock and get people into fit mode! JCDecaux have been given the go-ahead in principle to operate a fleet of 500 rental bikes to be made available at 25 locations around Dublin. The blue and white bikes will be available for rental for a nominal fee of about €1 per hour, but would-be cyclists will need to prove their identities either through a valid Dublin bus pass or credit card. It’s at a conceptual stage right now, but a step in the right direction!
