What job are you doing in Ireland?
I got a job in 2 days with the Meghan Group, in ‘Stream’, working as an administrator on a ‘Nikkon’ Project.

Where & Who are you living with here?
I live in Drumcondra, a walk from the city centre, with 5 others. One guy, from South Africa, I met at the orientation and got the apartment through him. There is also someone from France, Italy, Poland and Ireland.

Whats your social scene like?
Its great with the people I am living with! We go to town to a different place each nite. I have been to the cinema quite a bit with 2 German girls that I met in the hostel. Last nite, went to see ‘Capote’!

Your most memorable thing to date in Ireland?
The hostel was the most memorable for me. It had so many different people from all over the world. The cultural differences were so great! Sharing a room with guys and girls took a bit to get used to, but I realised that’s what hostelling is all about when you are travelling!

Can you sum up your experience on the WII program to date?
Well its my first time living in an apartment like this, and the freedom to date has been the biggest thing for me.

Advice you would give any students thinking about going on the WII program? Overall, just save up some money and just do it. Its great to explore your own horizons and this is a great way to do that. You have the organisation on the ground to help you, and yet you are independent!

Jack Johnson opens European Tour in Dublin

Jack Johnson opened his European tour in Dublin on February 22nd to a sell out crowd of almost 10,000 people! He brought an air of contentment among the crowd of swaying arms and lyric loving fans! This surfer/musician had been in Ireland previously, while filming a surf movie in Bundoran, on our idyllic northern shores or Ireland. Being an avid fan of the Emerald Isle he was more than happy to start his tour hugely popular tour to the energetic Irish crowd that was!

Syriana

Controversial 'Syriana' movie sceens in Dublin

The Savoy Cinema on O’Connell Street Dublin, hosted the screening of Stephen Gaghan’s Academy Award nominated spy drama, Syriana. Mark Kinsella picked up some fantastic thoughts from the festival audience.

“Films like Syriana, are already preaching to the converted that understand and have a good sense of the situations in Middle East and its oil. I would love other people to go see this film; it’s a very important film. Myself, I found it very affecting.”

“A brilliant piece of work, but it has a lot of branches and deserves a second viewing to fully digest the strands of stories involved in the film.”

“Superb. It asks so many tough questions but refuses to give easy answers. A very important film that should be seen by a vast audience.”

“An excellent film, glues you to the screen and at the same time it’s very sad and brutally honest. Fantastically written, tensely directed and George Clooney gave a memorising performance, I can see him winning his Oscar."

Rampant Ireland add to Welsh Woe in Rugby
Ireland……31 Wales……5

Ireland completed a wretched fortnight for Welsh rugby with a comprehensive victory over the defending RBS Six Nations champions at Lansdowne road at the weekend. Tries from David Wallace, Shane Horgan and Peter Stringer, plus 16 points from the boot of Ronan O’Gara, kept Ireland’s championship aspirations alive and kicking.

Book of Kells

Google Project a winner for Dublin City University

A pioneering venture developing web technology for searching handwritten texts has attracted investment from Google! The Book of Kells, George Washington’s personal diaries and other rare historical documents may soon be available on the web, thanks to research Dublin City University is carrying out for Google! While these kind of documents were kept behind closed doors or were only accessible by searching digital libraries one page at a time, DCU has teamed up with 2 american universities to change all that! The have designed algorithims that can detect the differences in shapes of handwritten words, a technique that could make handwritten manuscripts available on Google within a few years.
